Mission Trips
The Basics
The third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica’s lush mountains and white, sandy beaches make it seem like paradise.
Despite the enchantment of this popular vacation destination, most tourists never leave the walls of their resorts—and are unaware of the suffering just minutes down the road.
High in the hills, families crowd into ramshackle houses, little more than sheds. Homelessness is rampant, mothers abandon children they can’t feed, and many Jamaicans turn to false gods to answer their desperate pleas for help.
Will you share share the hope of a real and loving God with those seeking Him?
Culture
Jamaicans tend to speak very quickly and may become quite animated. They appreciate laughter and laugh often.
Jamaicans place more emphasis on people and relationships than to the strict adherence of set schedules in social situations. The bus, train, and plane schedules will not always be adhered to. “Soon come” is a favorite saying. Keep in mind it could mean 10 minutes, two hours, or two days! It’s a good idea to be patient.
Since it is a tourist destination, tipping 10% at restaurants and in taxis is common.
